STORIES WILL RECEIVE AN ‘A’ IF:

  • Lede is well written
  • Nut graf gives importance
  • Contains at least three sources
  • Uses quotes high in the structure
  • Quote structure is solid
  • Reported well, with attention mindedspace given to both sides of the story
  • Doesn’t show bias (unless an opinion story)

STORIES WILL RECEIVE A ‘B’ IF:

  • Lede is workable
  • Decent nut graf, but doesn’t really convey fully the importance of story
  • Contains only one or two sources
  • Uses quotes sporadically or all at the end
  • Quote structure contains some mistakes
  • Decent reporting, with areas that attempt to show both sides of story
  • Bias is slightly discernible

STORIES WILL RECEIVE A ‘C’ IF:

  • Lede is messy and confusing
  • Nut graf is missing or not discernible
  • Contains less than one or no sourcesContains one or fewer sources
  • Uses no quotes or paraphrases everything
  • Overuses paraphrasing or lacks quotes
  • Quote structure is full of mistakes
  • Little or no reporting
  • Bias is blatant

STORIES WILL RECEIVE A ‘D’ IF:

  • Lede is barely put together
  • No nut graf
  • No structure
  • No outside sources
  • Pulls quotes from secondary sources
  • Internet-based reporting with no depth
  • Bias is blatant

STORIES WILL RECEIVE AN ‘F’ IF:

  • Work is done haphazardly, without care
  • Story is one paragraph or too short for topic
  • Little is done to adhere to newswriting guidelines
